With weight loss, there is no one-size fits all. Each person will have their own unique journey - even within their choice to follow a non-surgical or surgical path. These guidelines will help you determine how to start your journey.
Non-Surgical Weight Loss
This program is a good approach if you:
- Have a BMI of 30 or more
- Have a BMI of 27-29.9 with certain health conditions
- Are 18 or older
- Have a BMI that qualifies for surgery but want to explore other avenues to lose weight
Options include medications and lifestyle changes.

Weight Loss Surgery
You may be a candidate for surgery if you:
- Are 100 pounds overweight or more with a BMI of 40 or greater
- Have a BMI of 35 or more with one or more serious health conditions linked to being obese such as diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea, and
- Have not been able to lose weight in other ways
Options include gastric sleeve, lap band, gastric bypass, BPD-DS, SADI-S and bariatric revision surgery.
