Letter From the Trauma Medical Director

Carlo Gammaitoni, MD

At Bryan Trauma Center, quality is a commitment that guides every decision we make and every patient we serve. Our trauma care is defined by urgency, precision and trust. Each moment matters, and each outcome reflects the strength of our systems from first responders to referral hospitals to the entire trauma team.

This year, our focus on quality has centered on consistency of care, performance improvement and accountability across every phase of the trauma continuum. From rapid assessment and resuscitation to recovery and rehabilitation, our multidisciplinary teams work together to ensure care is timely, evidence-based and patient-centered. Our long-standing verification and role as the home of ATLS reflect our enduring responsibility to lead, educate and continuously improve.

Quality in trauma care means more than meeting standards. It means anticipating needs, closing gaps and creating systems that support clinicians to deliver the best possible outcomes. Through performance improvement initiatives, data-driven review and collaborative practice within Bryan Health, we continuously advance care for every patient who enters our doors.

These beliefs shape our work and inspire our team. I am proud of the dedication shown by our trauma professionals throughout the continuum of care and grateful for the trust our communities place in us.

About the Bryan Trauma Center

The Bryan Trauma Center, located in Lincoln, Nebraska, provides comprehensive, patient-centered trauma care to the region. The program has maintained continuous verification by the American College of Surgeons since 1982, reflecting a longstanding commitment to the highest standards of trauma care. As the regional home of Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) education, the center plays a vital role in training physicians and clinical teams to deliver standardized, evidence-based care for injured patients.

In 2025, the program focused on rapid assessment, timely intervention and coordinated multidisciplinary care across the trauma continuum to continuously enhance patient care. Trauma surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing, rehabilitation and ancillary services all collaborate to optimize outcomes from arrival through recovery.

Key priorities included strengthening performance improvement and patient safety processes, enhancing trauma registry data quality, and advancing staff education and readiness. Community outreach and injury prevention initiatives supported regional partnerships and improved access to trauma services for referring facilities.

Through ongoing evaluation, education and teamwork, the Bryan Trauma Center continues to advance high-quality trauma care and uphold its mission to serve patients and families with excellence, compassion and accountability.

Education, Injury Prevention and Outreach

The American College of Surgeons verifies the Bryan Medical Center Trauma Program status on a regular basis. This ensures our resources, care and continuing quality improvement processes meet rigorous standards. Our designation as a Level II Trauma Center assures critically injured patients receive definitive trauma care.

The standards include a requirement for the Trauma Center to share its knowledge and expertise in the community and around the region. Our education and outreach efforts reach clinicians and the public in Lincoln and far beyond.

    • Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers from across Nebraska and surrounding states attend our Advanced Trauma Life Support classes. This intensive training, created by Lincoln doctors in 1976, is now the standard of training for trauma clinicians worldwide. We are proud of our tradition as ‘The Home of ATLS.’ Today, we present the new, 11th edition of this foundational course.
    • Nurses from across the region attend regular sessions of the Trauma Nurse Core Course and Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses at the Bryan Trauma Center. These classes provide specialized education to optimize care for trauma patients. We also host regular nursing continuing education presentations, like our bimonthly Trauma Grand Rounds sessions.
    • Emergency Medical Services staff receive virtual and live sessions from the Trauma Center. Regular EMS Trauma Case Review sessions are accessed virtually statewide by hundreds of providers. Our professionals travel the state presenting education and hands-on skills practice for prehospital providers.

  • Bryan Trauma Symposium, a biennial conference, provides a full day of trauma education for prehospital, nursing and medical providers from Bryan Medical Center and our partner facilities across the state.
  • Public Education includes Stop the Bleed trainings to workplaces and community groups to teach non-medical responders to use tourniquets and other skills to manage life-threatening hemorrhage until medical help arrives. Additional community offerings include fall prevention and bicycle safety education to promote safety and reduce injury and mortality in our region. We are honored to be a leader in trauma education and injury prevention in our community and beyond.

We invite you to view professional trauma education offerings for physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses and emergency medical services staff.
