MRI
Options for your comfort and the most accurate diagnosis
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging method that uses radio waves and a powerful magnetic field rather than X-rays to produce clear and detailed images of virtually any part of your body. MRIs provide the ability to look at organs, bones and soft tissue parts of your body to help diagnose illness or injury.
Bryan Health uses advanced MRI technology to provide you with the best diagnostic quality and a comfortable environment. Our large, spacious technology accommodates claustrophobic patients, as well as patients up to 550 pounds.
How an MRI Works
The MRI scanner is essentially a large tunnel that is open on each end. The body part being imaged must be placed in the center of the scanner's bore. This typically leaves some portion of your body outside of the bore.
During an MRI scan, you will remain still in one position. Most MRI scans take about 45 minutes. Sometimes sedation is used, especially for young patients. Sedation also may be helpful for patients who are extremely claustrophobic. In general, most patients successfully complete an MRI without sedation.
Because the MRI scanner makes a lot of noise during the imaging process, we provide you with hearing protection, usually in the form of ear plugs. You will still be able to hear the noise, but it will be at a safe level. Music options vary by location and exam.
MRI Options
Our MRI systems provide highly detailed images to give doctors the information they need. We offer two magnet strengths so that your doctor can determine the best option for you.
Large bore 1.5T
A 1.5 Tesla (1.5T) MRI is the most commonly used magnet in diagnostic imaging. These MRI exams are available at:
- Bryan Medical Plaza
- Bryan Pine Lake Campus
- Bryan West Campus
- Bryan South Campus
- Crete Area Medical Center
- Kearney Regional Medical Center
Large bore 3T
A 3 Tesla (3T) magnet is the strongest magnet strength used today. The 3T MRI is available at:
Preparing for Your MRI
Before your exam, you’ll complete a MRI screening form to provide a detailed surgical and medical history. Because the MRI uses a powerful magnet, it’s important to let us know about any metallic objects that are present in your body.
After Your MRI
Our board certified radiologist reads your exam. The results are sent to your doctor within 24 hours. You can view your results online through MyChart. If you don't have MyChart, learn more and sign up online today.
