DEXA Whole-Body Scan
Learn your body composition
Your body composition can tell you a lot about your overall health. It can help those seeking to improve fitness and performance. It's a valuable tool to monitor your health and identify any potential concerns early. It's also beneficial for those losing weight or taking certain medications.
What is a Whole-Body DEXA Scan?
A whole-body DEXA scan provides detailed measurements of your body composition. It looks at your bones, muscle mass and fat mass. This information is critical to accurately assess overall health and determine any next steps to help you reach your health and fitness goals.
Benefits for Health Monitoring and Fitness Performance
With this scan you can track your health and fitness progress.
- Weight Loss Programs: Measure fat loss and muscle gain over time; make sure you are losing fat rather than muscle.
- Weight Gain Programs: Measure your muscle-to-fat ratio to ensure you are gaining healthy weight.
- Estimate Your Metabolic Rate: Knowing your Resting Metabolic Rate can help guide your calorie intake.
- Medication Monitoring: Certain medications can deteriorate your bones and muscle over a long period of time; a whole-body DEXA scan can help monitor your bone and muscle mass to avoid complications and maintain healthy bones and muscles.
With this information, you can create and adjust health and fitness plans/treatments to reach your goals.
Who Should Consider a Whole-Body DEXA Scan?
Anyone can benefit from knowing this health information. This scan is especially beneficial for:
- Those with weight loss/gain, fitness and health goals
- Athletes or anyone starting a new training/exercise program
- People at risk for bone density loss due to post-menopause, medications or family history
How Whole-Body Scan Works
The DEXA exam takes about 30 minutes. It's painless and non-invasive. You can wear your regular clothes for this exam as long as you are not wearing anything that contains metal. To straighten the spine during the exam, your legs will rest on a sponge. You will need to hold very still. Once relaxed and in position, the equipment’s arm will slowly move across your body. The machine does not touch you. Your licensed radiologic technologist will be by your side throughout the exam.
Preparing for Your Scan
Do not take calcium supplements for 24 hours before your scan. Dress comfortably. Because metal items (zippers, metal buttons, snaps, etc.) will interfere with the imaging, you might be asked to wear a hospital gown.
Be sure to let your technologist know if:
- You are pregnant or think you may be pregnant
- You have had any spinal or hip surgery
- You have had a recent CT scan or other recent x-rays where you have received contrast
After Your Scan
Your scan is read by a board certified radiologist. The results are sent to your doctor within 24 hours. You can view your results online through MyChart. If you don't have MyChart, learn more and sign up online today.
