3D Mammography - How a Simple Test Could Save Your Life
Benefits of 3D Mammography
- 40 percent more invasive cancers found over 2D mammography
- Up to a 40 percent reduction in recall rates, decreasing patient anxiety
- Better visualization of masses, distortions and asymmetric densities
- Eliminates overlapping structures in the breast
How 3D Mammography Works
Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography) is FDA-approved. It gives radiologists a three-dimensional image of the breast. Breasts are composed of pockets of dense tissue surrounded by fat, and when x-rayed it creates an image that has overlapping tissue making it difficult to see tiny microcalcifications, and other subtle signs of early cancer.
3D mammography allows our radiologists to see detail in a way never before possible – and that’s important to you because it allows cancer to be detected at its earliest and most treatable stage.
How 3D Mammography is Different than 2D Mammography
Traditional digital mammography takes two-dimensional pictures of the breast and is still one of the most advanced tools available for detecting breast abnormalities. 3D mammography helps differentiate lesions from normal overlapping tissue seen in 2D mammography. This results in more accurate diagnosis for you, fewer callbacks and greater peace of mind. It also allows our radiologists to detect breast cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage.
What to Expect During Your 3D Mammography
You will not notice any difference between a traditional 2D mammogram and a 3D mammogram except that the imaging will take an additional two-three seconds per views. It’s a few seconds for the best image possible of your breast, and the earliest detection possible.
Who Should Have 3D Mammography
3D mammography is approved for all women who would be undergoing a standard mammogram, in both the screening and diagnostic settings. It is especially beneficial for women with dense breast tissue.
