Comprehensive Stroke Care
Stroke often impacts strength, coordination and balance. Our therapists work with you to improve:
-
Mobility & Physical Function
Stroke often impacts strength, coordination and balance. Our physical therapists work with you to improve walking and movement, fall prevention and safety, postural control and endurance and transfers (e.g., getting in/out of bed or chairs).
-
Speech, Language & Communication
Our speech-language pathologists specialize in helping patients who experience difficulty speaking or understanding others, reading, writing, or math impairments as well as communication frustration & confidence loss. We use proven techniques to rebuild communication skills with empathy and precision.
-
Vision & Visual Processing
Strokes can also disrupt how the brain processes visual information. At Bryan, stroke survivors benefit from direct collaboration with neuro-optometrist Dr. Katie Layton, who works alongside our team to manage issues such as eye tracking & coordination problems, visual field loss and double vision.
-
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
From brushing your teeth to cooking meals, daily tasks can be challenging after a stroke. Our occupational therapists help you rebuild independence through home preparation & equipment recommendations, real-world task simulation and self-care skill development.
-
Swallowing (Dysphagia)
Many stroke survivors face challenges with swallowing safely. speech-language pathologists teach patients exercises to improve coordination & reduce aspiration risk, perform swallowing assessments, modify diets when necessary, and utilize VitalStim® therapy for targeted neuromuscular re-education.
-
Thinking & Memory
Cognitive impairments like poor attention, memory loss or decreased problem-solving are common after stroke. Our speech-language pathologists use evidence-based strategies to support improved short- & long-term memory, safety awareness & insight and executive functioning.

Real Stories of Recovery
No two ways about it, having a stroke is a life-changing experience. Patients and families should know that the doctors and staff of the Bryan acute rehabilitation unit are there to help, and they are very, very good at what they do.
Storm
Bryan rehab therapists push you to work hard on your exercises, but they are loving and caring in how they do this. Communication with my doctor was excellent – she checked in every day to make sure my family and I had all of our questions answered. About a year after my stroke I'm back to at least 80 percent of my abilities. I tell people who have had a severe stroke like mine to be patient, think positive and know you can improve.
