Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)
The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) is a federal program that sets quality standards for laboratory testing to ensure patient safety and improve health care. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) oversees CLIA and grants deemed status to accrediting agencies like CAP and AABB. CLIA regulates labs performing tests to ensure accurate, reliable and timely results, covering test types, personnel training, quality control and result reporting.
