Acupuncture
Pain Relief, Holistic Healing and More
Acupuncture is beneficial for many conditions and can be used along with conventional medicine or as an independent therapy. Most known for pain management, acupuncture also helps with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, insomnia, side effects of chemotherapy and systemic issues.
It involves the insertion of very thin, sterile wire needles (as narrow as your hair) through the skin at strategic points. This produces a sensation but is not painful. Acupuncture helps muscle relax by targeting a special spot, breaking a cycle of poor blood flow and allowing the body to heal in a better way. Acupuncture has been shown to block nerve pain and decrease inflammation. Each treatment helps release endorphin hormones, dopamine and serotonin, which reminds the body to increase these levels on its own.
What should I expect at my appointment?
After you complete a brief questionnaire, your acupuncturist will get to know you and discuss your condition and goals. You will then lie down on a heated massage table. The acupuncturist will then insert thin needles of various lengths into areas of your skin based on your specific condition. You then rest while the muscles relax. Sessions usually last between 25-50 minutes depending on what is being treated.
What does acupuncture feel like?
- You may feel a tingle or pressure, but it should not be painful.
- Most patients experience deep relaxation or calmness.
- Many times the experience is so relaxing you may fall asleep during your session!
- There is usually no discomfort when they remove the needles.
