Geriatric Mental Health
Older adults and their family members often overlook mental health conditions attributing symptoms to aging or other health concerns. According to the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry the suicide rate is highest among persons age 65 and over, compared to all other age groups. Additionally, mental illness symptoms may be masked by other conditions.
Mental health plays a unique role in the health and well being of older adults. Older adults have very special physical, mental and emotional needs that require experienced professionals to effectively treat and diagnose conditions.
At Bryan Heartland Psychiatry, we take a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and treating mental health conditions in older adults. This includes listening and responding to every need of the older adult and helping families understand ways to help loved ones.
Common mental health issues found in older adults:
- Depression
- Dementia
- Anxiety
- Late-life schizophrenia
- Coping with sudden change (i.e., death of a spouse)
