New Patient Referral
If you want to refer a patient or be a new patient, we require medical records be reviewed prior to scheduling. Please have your referring doctor fax or mail us the following:
- Letter of referral reason and urgency
- Patient demographics, including insurance
- Last six months of office visit/clinic notes
We will notify the referring office by letter if your patient is scheduled or placed on a waiting list. Please note that we strive to provide quality care in a timely fashion, but due to limited endocrinology care in the area, it may take several weeks to months for new patients to be seen in our clinic. Our new patient referral form can be filled out and attached with records.

Meet our Providers
Shannon Wakeley, MD
Dr. Wakeley is a native Nebraskan with roots in northeast Nebraska. She completed a degree in exercise science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She then attended medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Following medical school she completed her internal medicine residency at the University of California, Davis in Sacramento. She then returned to Nebraska where she attended UNMC and completed her endocrinology fellowship in July 2010. Since that time she has been practicing general endocrinology in Lincoln, Neb.
Outside of her career, she enjoys spending time with her family, running, hiking and travel.
Aaron Ward, MD
Dr. Ward grew up in rural Nebraska. He completed his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He then attended medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Following medical school, he completed his internal medicine residency at the University of California, Davis in Sacramento.
Since returning to Nebraska his career has taken him from general internist, to hospitalist and now diabetes consultant. He has special interest in diabetes prevention, cardio metabolic risk reduction through lifestyle changes and complex lipid management. He loves working with emerging diabetes technologies such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring. Dr. Ward is a member of the American Diabetes Association and National Lipid Association as well as many technology interest groups.
“I get so excited when my patients have breakthroughs with new technologies, or are able to prevent or cut back on medication use through lifestyle changes or new therapies. If it’s not effective, simple and affordable it’s probably not going to work. Every person needs their own individualized plan. I love having discussions about why we recommend different therapies, and knowing we are giving the most current, personalized care.”
Madeline Jones-Ryan, DO
My focus is caring for the whole person – mind and body – versus just the disease. Using my background and training, I work my patients to develop successful strategies that take into account various aspects of their life.
My specialty is treating endocrine issues. This includes conditions such as:
- Thyroid – cancer, nodules, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism
- Transgender care
- Adrenal gland disorders
- Pituitary disorders
- Osteoporosis, parathyroid
As a person with type 1 diabetes, I have a special interest helping patients live with diabetes. I am a big proponent of diabetes technology and how new advances in this area can improve the health and lifestyle for my patients. This includes pumps, continuous glucose monitors and other technology.
Emily Plautz, PA-C
Emily grew up on a farm in central Nebraska. After earning a bachelor’s degree in nutrition science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, she went on to attend the University of Nebraska Medical Center where she earned her master’s degree in physician assistant studies. She enjoys all aspects of endocrinology, and is especially interested in diabetes management.
In her free time, Emily enjoys traveling, reading, running and spending time with friends and family.
Dylan Oatman, PA-C
My goal when patients visit is that they feel heard and that I answer all questions or concerns appropriately and thoroughly. I enjoy educating patients and equipping them with knowledge, so they feel empowered and involved in the decision-making process. I like to create an environment where patients feel comfortable and cared for, and that they are making progress toward their health goals.
Special areas of interest include:
- Cardiometabolic issues (these are interrelated conditions that include coronary heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure as well as type 2 diabetes, obesity and liver disease)
- Thyroid disease
- General endocrinology issues
- Transgender care
Being a Lincoln native, I feel thankful to be able to give back by providing care to those in the Lincoln and surrounding areas. It’s a very rewarding feeling to be able to help patients feel better in their time of need. It inspires me to do my best each day.
We value you as a patient and we also value your time. Please value our time as well as the time and schedules of other patients. Our providers strive to be on time with all patient appointments. They also value having adequate time to see each of their patients. Occasionally emergencies or unexpected circumstances occur that may affect this.
As a new patient, please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow for ample time to complete registration and paperwork.
As an established patient, please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment. This will help improve the quality of your visit and increase the time you have to discuss your care and concerns with your provider.
If you are more than 10 minutes late for your scheduled appointment, you may be asked to reschedule.
Cancellation/No Show Policy
We ask that you give 24-hour notice if you need to cancel an appointment. We understand that emergencies do happen, and 24-hour notice may not always be possible. If you do not show up for your appointment without calling or giving advance notice for three appointments or if you repeatedly cancel appointments, we will evaluate whether we can continue to care for you as a patient due to the disruption in the schedule that this causes for our other patients.
