It's never too soon to start planning for your baby's birth. As your due date gets closer, you will have plenty of questions. It's also normal to have thoughts and feelings about labor and delivery, including fear of the unknown.

Learning about your options early in your pregnancy and talking to your doctor will help you decide what is best for you. Whether you prefer a an unmedicated birth, pain medications or other methods to help during labor, the choice is yours.

With the birth of your baby on the horizon, you already have a lot on your mind. Use our simple checklist of what to bring with you during your stay at Kearney Regional Medical Center for you and your baby.

Here is our list of recommended items during your stay:

For Labor

• Your birth plan
• Insurance card
• Picture I.D.
• Chapstick
• Massage oil
• Massage tools such as tennis balls in a sock, foam noodle
• Relaxing music
• Hair tie or barrette, if you think you may need them
• Childbirth class materials

After Labor

• Personal items such as a bathrobe, nightgown, slippers
• Healthy snacks such as granola bars, crackers, fruit, etc. It is likely that you will be hungry after labor, so make sure to stock up on healthy, plentiful snacks. Our nourishment center also has many snacks available
• Toiletries
• A nursing bra and breast pads
• A going-home outfit. Keep in mind that you will probably need an elastic waistband; you may still look five-six months pregnant

For Your Partner/Labor Coach

• Basic toiletries
• Money for vending machines
• Reading materials
• Change of clothes and clothes for sleeping
• A camera or video camera and film, memory card or batteries

For Your Baby

• A going-home and picture outfit
• A pair of socks or booties
• An infant car seat
• A blanket, depending on the weather

A certified lactation nurse is available to meet with you after your baby’s birth. This nurse will share information about the breastfeeding and provide support as you learn how to feed your baby. You will enjoy a comfortable, private birthing suite for your labor and delivery. An in-room jacuzzi tub is available to help with relaxation and pain control. In the event of a cesarean delivery, a state-of-the-art surgical suite is located just across the hall.

During and after delivery, you and your family will enjoy a private room to bond. Your baby can stay safe and secure while at KRMC, as our Maternity Care Center is private, locked and monitored. When you are resting, staff can help monitor and care for your baby. We encourage you to have your baby in your room as much as possible.

Before going home with your baby, you will receive personalized instructions on newborn care. We recommend regular well-child exams with your family doctor or pediatrician to ensure your baby is growing and healthy.

We’re here to give your baby the best possible start in life. If your baby is 32 weeks or older and needs extra care, our Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has private rooms for you to bond with your baby while receiving optimum care with state-of-the-art technology. Not only will you experience a close-knit team of nurses who care about you and your baby’s health, but you’ll also have a multi-disciplinary team, including pediatricians, doctors, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, social workers, lactation consultants and pharmacists, focused on your success.
