For everyone's safety, masks are required for everyone in our facilities. This includes visitors and patients (except in special circumstances).

Department Shadowing (Non-Doctor) 

Gain experience in health care by shadowing an individual within one of the many career fields available at Bryan. Our friendly employees are excited to have you alongside them as you learn about their area of expertise. Not only will you learn about your interested career, but you’ll also develop professional connections with those you shadow.

All shadowing requests are approved by department managers and will be granted based on available staff and individual department workload.

Requirements for Department Shadowing (Non-Doctor) 

Prior to shadowing, you will be required to verify that you meet these requirements. 

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be a high school graduate or have your GED
  • Must be an undergraduate college student or above or enrolled in a health care program

Required Immunizations

To shadow at Bryan Medical Center, history of immunity/immunizations for the following diseases is required:

  • Mumps, Rubella, Rubeola (MMR)
  • Varicella or past history of chickenpox
  • Hepatitis B
  • Flu shot (required September 1-April 30); must be received at least two weeks in advance of shadowing within the required period. If you are unable to provide proof of vaccination, you will be required to wear a face mask
  • Negative tuberculin (TB) skin test or follow-up care for previously positive TB skin test (required to be be completed within the last two years)
  • DPT/TDAP (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus)
  • Note: COVID-19 vaccine not required

Important COVID-19 Information 

  • Individuals must not enter COVID units or care for COVID positive or patients under investigation (PUI) for COVID
  • COVID self-monitoring
    • Individuals must self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms at all times
      • Fever, chills
      • Cough
      • Shortness of breath
      • Difficulty breathing
      • Pain
      • Headache
      • Sore throat
      • New loss of taste or smell

If symptomatic, you will not be able to shadow.

Entrance screenings

  • You must go through screening and temperature checks when coming into the building
  • If you do not pass the screening, you will not be able to enter the building

Personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • You will be required to wear a mask while in the building. Surgical masks are available on clinical units
  • When in patient rooms, a surgical mask and goggles or a face shield must be worn

Department Shadowing (Non-Doctor) Steps

To Request a Shadowing Experience

  1. Complete the required Computer Based Learning (CBL) with access to a printer.
    - Complete inquiry page at the end of the CBL.
    In order for your shadowing to be scheduled, this page must be submitted. This form will be emailed to Human Resources who will arrange a date and time for your shadow experience via email.
  2. Please allow two-three weeks for Bryan human resources to contact you about your shadowing request. If you do not receive an email for any reason within this time frame, please contact Human Resources at 402-481-8610 or email

Day of Your Shadowing Experience

  1. Dress in business casual attire with closed toed shoes.
  2. Leave your cell phone at home or in your car.
  3. Wear a mask into the building and allow extra time to go through the entrance screening. 
  4. Bring your shadowing record sheet.
  5. Pick up your name badge at Human Resources, Bryan East Campus or Bryan West Campus.
    You CANNOT shadow if you don’t have your name badge.

  6. Report for shadowing at the time and place arranged for you by Human Resources. Human Resources will provide this information to you by email.

After Your Shadowing Experience

  1. Remember that patient confidentiality rules continue to apply after your shadowing experience.
  2. Turn in your shadow record sheet and name badge to Human Resources before you leave on your last day of shadowing.
  3. Consider writing a thank you note to the person you shadowed.
