New Postpartum Initiative at Bryan

Helps Mom Avoid Serious Blood Clot Issue After Birth

A new statewide initiative is helping protect new mothers by reminding them and their families to watch for postpartum warning signs through a simple blue wristband.

Sophie Stege-Tompsett experienced firsthand how the program can potentially save lives. What started as pain around her ankle nine days after giving birth turned into something much more serious.

When the pain moved up to behind her knee, she credited her husband and the blue wristband with reminding her of the education she received after giving birth and encouraging her to call her doctor.

Her doctor ordered an ultrasound, and the radiologist immediately noticed a blood clot behind her knee, sending her to the emergency room for further treatment.

The blue wristband is part of a statewide initiative by the Nebraska Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative called Postpartum Alert. The wristband serves as a reminder to mothers and families to watch for postpartum symptoms.

It also helps health professionals across the state immediately recognize they are dealing with a postpartum patient, where symptoms may have different causes than in other patients.

Today, both mother and daughter are happy and healthy. For Bryan staff, seeing success stories like this shows even small changes like a simple wristband can make a big difference.
