Brenda Seehafer Hiking

From Diagnosis to Determination:

A Path to Prevent Diabetes

Brenda was shocked to hear that she had prediabetes, as she always associated diabetes with being overweight. Her weight has always fluctuated, and she had a history of high cholesterol. She also learned that diabetes runs in her family. When she found out her A1C was above 5.7%, she knew she needed to take action.

A1C is a measure of a person’s blood sugar level and helps determine if you have prediabetes or diabetes. Ideally it should be below 5.7%. A range of 5.7% to 6.4% is considered prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes.

Brenda discovered the Bryan Diabetes Prevention Program online and decided to attend an information session to learn more. After learning more about the program she thought, “Why not try the program instead of taking more medications?” Brenda signed up for the yearlong program and gained life-changing education, support and results.

“I really didn’t think I could do it first, but then I thought to myself, yes you can,” Brenda exclaimed. After six months, she lowered her A1C to a healthy 5.4%, reached her goal weight and no longer had prediabetes. “I’ve felt the best I’ve ever felt physically,” says Brenda.

Clarity that sparked real progress

For Brenda, it was the education, accountability and support that made the difference. “I knew a lot about what I needed to do but I wasn’t consistent. I started looking at serving sizes. I’m so much more mindful of what I put in my mouth.” says Brenda.

The support she received helped encourage her to maintain the lessons she learned along the way. “Whenever I slipped up, they would tell me it wasn’t a failure, you just start again. Class has been good for me.”

Since taking the class, Brenda has made incredible accomplishments. “Eating better, losing weight and exercising helped me hike 10-15 miles through five national parks! Quite an achievement for me.”
