Parkinson’s Foundation Awards Bryan Health Grant to Expand Rock Steady Boxing Program
The Parkinson’s Foundation awarded Bryan Health an $8,000 grant to expand its Rock Steady Boxing program. Rock Steady is a no-contact fitness program that is clinically proven to help delay progression of Parkinson’s disease and improve quality of life.
With this grant, Bryan will now provide an evening class three days a week, beginning August 31. Additionally, financial and travel assistance opportunities are available for qualifying participants.
“Rock Steady Boxing gives those with Parkinson’s the power to fight back, build physical strength and find a network of support,” said Cindy Nehe, director of rehabilitation services, Bryan Medical Center. “This grant allows us to grow our program and welcome more participants into our supportive community.”
Rock Steady Boxing is a medical exercise program for Parkinson’s patients, including those with early onset Parkinson’s. Sessions use boxing motions that move the body in all planes of direction, which helps patients increase strength, flexibility, speed and balance. Classes also include cognitive exercises to strengthen the brain while performing physical tasks.
The program offers four levels of classes to meet the needs of individuals with varying Parkinson’s symptoms. Level one and two boxers have less evident symptoms and more experience with physical activity. Level three and four individuals have more pronounced symptoms and minimal athletic background.
“The Parkinson’s Foundation is proud to support investments that directly reach communities across the country in need of access to meaningful programs that understand and are equipped to address local needs,” said John L. Lehr, president and CEO, Parkinson’s Foundation. “Our community grant programs are truly life-changing for people with Parkinson’s from all walks of life.”
Bryan LifePointe is the only facility in Lincoln to offer Rock Steady Boxing. Multiple sessions are available throughout the week.
