Bryan Health Launches Sammy's Bus, a Mobile Mammography Unit

Bryan Health is launching Sammy’s Bus, a mobile mammography unit designed to improve accessibility to important breast cancer screenings in Lincoln and surrounding communities.

“Sammy’s Bus provides women access to life-saving mammograms in underserved areas,” said Anne Dorn, radiology manager, Bryan Medical Center. “This mobile unit helps break down the barriers of distance and time so that early detection is possible for anyone, anywhere in a trusted environment.”

Sammy’s Bus offers breast cancer screenings in a compassionate and convenient environment. The specially-equipped vehicle provides mammograms to individuals who meet the requirements, regardless of insurance or financial situation. Each appointment takes about 20 minutes and is the same 3D, high-quality mammogram available at Bryan’s onsite locations.

To receive a mammogram on Sammy’s Bus, individuals need to:

• Obtain an order from their primary care provider
• Schedule an appointment by calling 402-481-5121
• Be at least 40 years old and one year removed from last mammogram

Sammy’s Bus began service in late July. The vehicle travels throughout Lincoln and surrounding communities. It’s staffed by specially trained mammography technologists and visits areas with limited access or gaps in breast cancer screenings.

Sammy’s Bus is the only mobile mammography unit in Lincoln. The vehicle and equipment were funded through the generosity of donations. Sammy represents a daughter, sister or mother whose goal is to help prevent families from losing a loved one to breast cancer.

“Sammy’s Bus is part of a vision to remove any obstacles that may prevent access to mammograms,” said Valerie Hunt, executive director, Bryan Foundation. “Our hopes, our goals and our dreams are that every woman is able to get a screening done here in our region and that early detection will save their lives and their loved ones’ lives.”

The first community event for Sammy’s Bus was "One Stop Cancer Shop" at the Malone Center on Friday, August 28. The event provided free health screenings to those who have the greatest risk factors for cancer prevalence. Breast, lung, colon and prostate cancer screenings were available. In addition to “One Stop”, Sammy’s Bus has already made several visits across the Capital City and will travel to Ashland in September.
