Know The Signs of Hypothermia

Temperatures are dangerously low in central Nebraska, posing a risk for hypothermia.

Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can be produced. When the body’s core temperature drops below 95°F, hypothermia occurs and requires immediate medical care.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred, speech, and drowsiness. Infants with hypothermia will experience, bright-red cold skin and decreased energy levels.

PREVENTION

If you need to go outdoors, limit your time outside and protect yourself by wearing clothing that covers your skin.

Watch for potential signs of hypothermia among vulnerable people including elderly adults, babies, and people consuming alcohol.

Grand Island Regional Medical Center urges attention during extreme cold weather. If you experience symptoms of hypothermia, visit our emergency department at 3533 Preview St. in Grand Island.
