Bryan Medical Center Earns Lowest Heart Failure and Heart Artery Bypass Surgery Readmission Rates Beckers Award

Bryan Medical Center Earns National Rankings

For Lowest Heart Failure and Heart Artery Bypass Surgery Readmission Rates

Bryan Medical Center earned national rankings for the lowest readmission rates after a heart failure hospitalization and coronary artery bypass surgery from Becker’s Hospital Review.

Bryan Medical Center claimed the 10th lowest rate in the nation for heart failure readmission rates, while receiving the 17th lowest rate for coronary artery bypass surgery readmissions. Bryan was the only hospital in Nebraska to rank in the top 20 nationally in both categories.

“Low readmission rates reflect high quality care and outstanding outcomes for patients,” said Dr. Robert Oakes, chief of staff and cardiothoracic surgery medical director, Bryan Medical Center. “It’s always great to receive recognition for our team’s efforts at delivering the best possible cardiac care.”

Becker’s Hospital Review is a prominent platform within the healthcare industry, serving as a key source of news, analysis and insights for leaders and professionals. They publish various lists and rankings based on patient feedback and certified data from CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services).

As part of its hospital readmissions reduction program, CMS measures unplanned hospital visits by how often patients visited a hospital after having a heart attack, heart failure, heart artery bypass surgery, hip/knee replacement and other surgical procedures. The visits are categorized as any unplanned readmission to an acute care hospital within 30 days of discharge.

Bryan Medical Center has a rich history of cardiac care in Nebraska. Over the last 65 years, Bryan was the first hospital in Lincoln to:

  • Perform an open-heart surgery
  • Implant a pacemaker
  • Establish a “Code Charlie” system for life-threatening medical care in the intensive and coronary care units

In 2024, Bryan Medical Center earned the HeartCare Center National Distinction of Excellence Award from the American College of Cardiology for the fifth consecutive year. Additionally, Bryan holds accreditation in multiple areas of cardiac and vascular care, including cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology and vascular ultrasound.
