Colorectal Cancer Screening Guidelines

There are often no symptoms of colon cancer in its early stages. Most colon cancers begin as a polyp, which can become cancerous and bleed or obstruct the intestine as they grow. When colon cancer does cause symptoms, they include:

  • Rectal bleeding
  • Blood in the stool or toilet after a bowel movement
  • Prolonged diarrhea
  • A change in the size or shape of your stool
  • Abdominal pain or a cramping pain in your lower stomach
  • A feeling of discomfort or urge to have a bowel movement when there is no need
  • Anemia

One of the primary ways to screen for colon cancer is through a colonoscopy. Colon cancer is one of the most easily preventable and treatable cancers, however most Nebraskans are not taking the steps necessary steps to maintain colon health.
