Job Shadowing

Doctor, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant and Other Provider Shadowing

Note: Since Bryan Medical Center does not employe providers, it is your responsibility to arrange shadowing directly with providers.

Doctor and Provider Shadowing Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age for provider shadowing
  • Must be at least 18 years of age to shadow in the operating room, emergency department or trauma services

Required Immunizations

To shadow at Bryan Medical Center, history of immunity/immunizations for the following diseases is required:

  • Mumps, Rubella, Rubeola (MMR)
  • Varicella or past history of chickenpox
  • Hepatitis B
  • Flu shot (required September 1-April 30); must be received at least two weeks in advance of shadowing within the required period
  • Negative tuberculin (TB) skin test or follow-up care for previously positive TB skin test (required to be be completed within the last two years)
  • DPT/TDAP (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus)

If you are job shadowing, you will be required to complete paperwork to tell the current status of these immunizations.

Shadowing Steps

To Set-Up a Shadowing Experience

High School/Undergraduates

  1. Arrange a shadowing experience with your selected provider. Reminder: It is your responsibility to arrange shadowing experiences with providers.

    Contact a provider or provider's office to determine whether or not they allow shadowing. If they do, with the provider or provider's office, decide on a date, time and location to meet for the shadowing experience.

  2. Once your shadowing experience is arranged, complete the required Computer Based Learning (CBL) module at least 48 hours before your shadowing time.

    Print and complete the parent permission form (if applicable), immunization form and confidentiality agreement.

    Complete the online inquiry page at the end of the CBL. This page must be submitted in order to shadow.

At Least 48 Hours Before Your Shadowing Experience

Submit your completed parental permission form (if applicable), immunization form and confidentiality agreement to Bryan Medical Staff Services. You can scan and email, fax or hand deliver your forms. This must be done at least 48 hours before your shadowing experience.

Day of Your Shadowing Experience

  1. Pick up your name badge at Bryan Medical Staff Services, Bryan East Campus.
  2. Leave your cell phone at home or in your car.
  3. Report for shadowing at the time and place determined between you and the provider you will shadow.

After Your Shadowing Experience

Remember that patient confidentiality rules continue to apply after your shadowing experience.
