Bryan Counseling Center Offers Tips on How to Avoid Stress-Eating

Lincoln, NE – With fall just around the corner, psychologists at Bryan Counseling Center are offering tips on how to avoid ‘stress-eating’, a type of eating that an individual does when not really hungry and are worried about something.

“With the weather getting cooler, school starting and projects needing finished before winter, fall can be a time when people turn to stress eating,” said Stacy Waldron, PhD, licensed psychologist at Bryan Counseling Center. “Often times, individuals allow their emotional state to determine their appetite and eat for comfort, stress relief or as a reward. This can potentially have negative, long-term effects on a person’s health.”

According to Dr. Waldron, there are several ways people can stop stress eating, or at least control it. She recommends a strategy called, “Stop and Take Notice”. This evaluation allows individuals to ask themselves simple questions and take note of their surroundings to eliminate the urge to eat:

  • First, when you are getting ready to reach for the comfort food to feed the stress, stop and pay attention to what is happening at that moment
  • Next, evaluate your appetite to determine if you are really hungry or reacting to stress
  • Third, choose an alternative activity instead of eating, like exercise, listening to music or reading a book
  • Finally, spend at least 15 minutes doing something besides eating when the craving hits
  • If you’re still hungry after this period, opt for a healthy snack such as fruit or string cheese
